The Shure SM57 is a dynamic microphone, great for recording speech and other types of sounds in both quiet and noisy environments. This is the standard microphone we use for recording speech in our audio labs.

Usage
- Connect the SM57 microphone to an audio interface or recorder via XLR cable. No phantom power required.
- Point the microphone towards the sound you wish to record.
For the best results, place the mic close to the source, on a stand. Optionally, the standard microphone clip can be replaced with a Shure A55M shock mount, to eliminate contact noise. This is especially helpful when using a desk stand.
⚠️ When handling the microphone, please grip the microphone body, NOT the pop filter! The foam filter is quite fragile and can tear easily.
Audio Interface Settings
The SM57 often requires more gain from your Audio Interface than you would perhaps expect, especially when recording speech in a quiet Sound Recording Lab. This is normal. The pre-amps in our RME Babyface and Behringer XR18 interfaces are able to deliver the additional gain without introducing significant noise, so don't be afraid to turn the (virtual) gain knob up if needed.
