Microphones turn sound into data. When you want to record sound for your experiment, please contact the TSG to discuss which microphone(s) is/are best suited for your application. Below is an overview of some of the microphones available within our research labs, and/or for use in the field.


Varieties

We categorize microphones by their connection type (wired vs wireless), transducer type, polar pattern, and form factor:

  • Dynamic - Typically rugged, versatile, don't require additional phantom power, and can handle loud noises.
  • Condenser - More sensitive than dynamic microphones. Often require phantom power (24-48V).
  • Shotgun - Highly directional, often with an interference tube design.
  • Lavalier - Tiny, typically clipped onto a person's collar or shirt to record speech.
  • Headset - Attached to headphones or headband, with a flexible arm for placement directly in front of the speaker's mouth.
